" I see earth. It's so beautiful !! "

" I see earth. It's so beautiful !! "
These are the first words spoken by a Man in Space.
[Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin, from the Vostok 1, April 12, 1961.]
"On the 12th of April, 1961, the Soviet spaceship-sputnik was put in orbit around the Earth with me on board" "...there was a good view of the Earth which had a very distinct and pretty blue halo. It had a smooth transition from pale blue, blue, dark blue, violet and absolutely black. It was a magnificent picture." [Gagarin in his official statement after the flight, April 15, 1961.]

" Houston, we have a problem "

John Swigert, Jr. and James Lovell who, with Fred Haise Jr., made up the crew of the US's Apollo 13 moon flight used almost this phrase to report a major technical problem back to their Houston base.

Swigert: 'Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here.'

Duke: 'This is Houston. Say again please.'

Lovell: 'Houston, we've had a problem.

We've had a main B bus undervolt.'

"It is the year 2001. You are in a weightless condition aboard the spaceliner Orion, on the first leg of your journey from Earth to the Moon." So began the "liner notes" on the back of the MGM soundtrack album for the remarkable 1968 motion picture 2001: A Space Odyssey, produced by Stanley Kubrick and based upon the science fiction story The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke. The album's written narrative envisioned a routine stop aboard Space Station Five, then a jaunt aboard the moon shuttle Aries. "You are now on Clavius—the permanent colony on the Moon."

" When the earth hits your eye like a great pizza pie - that's ... uuhh, different "

" When the moon hits your eye like a big-a pizza pie -
That's amore
When the world seems to shine like you'vehad too much wine -
That's amore
When the stars make you drool joost-a like pasta fazool -
That's amore
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet,
you're in love
When you walk in a dream but you know you're not dreamin',
signore 'scusa me, but you see, back in old Napoli, that's amore

Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"Vita bell-vita bella
Hearts will play tippi-tippi-tay,tippi-tippi-tay
Like a gay tarantella "

transcribed by Commander Pavel Chekov

That's Amore- Artist: Dean Martin as sung on "Dean Martin's Greatest Hits"- Capitol 4XL-9389- peak Billboard position # 2 in 1953- from the movie "the Caddy" starring Dean, Jerry Lewis, and Donna Reed- Words and Music by Harry Warren and Jack Brooks

Alright, great - that's all good to know;
but what's a 'gay Tarantella' ??

The tarantella (tarentule, tarentella, tarantelle, tarentelle, tarantel) is a traditional dance 6/8 or 4/4 time characterised by the rapid whirling of couples. There are several local variations of this dance, including the Neapolitan, Sicilian, Apulian and Calabrian tarantellas. It is led by a central singer/speaker. A tarantella is also a song that can be played by instrumentalists.

" That's one small step for a man - one giant leap for mankind"

" That's one small step for a man - one giant leap for mankind" Neil Armstrong's words on first setting foot on the moon, in 1969. A strong contender as the most famous line ever to have been uttered.
Origin
Armstrong's words are sometimes given as, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Clearly the event was of huge significance and the choice of words was quite deliberate. Armstrong maintained for some time later that he said "for a man" rather than "for man". That it was what he, with the help of his wife, had prepared in advance. The rather fuzzy tapes of the event aren't clear enough to be sure, although the 'a' does appear to be missing. In more recent years, after listening again to the recording, Armstrong has acknowledged that he may have fluffed his line. More recently still, analysis of the tape indicates that the 'a' may have be present on the recording but is too indistinct to hear.
