"It is the year 2001. You are in a weightless condition aboard the spaceliner Orion, on the first leg of your journey from Earth to the Moon." So began the "liner notes" on the back of the MGM soundtrack album for the remarkable 1968 motion picture 2001: A Space Odyssey, produced by Stanley Kubrick and based upon the science fiction story The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke. The album's written narrative envisioned a routine stop aboard Space Station Five, then a jaunt aboard the moon shuttle Aries. "You are now on Clavius—the permanent colony on the Moon."
